5 Must Do Day Trips From London

One of the best parts about currently living in the UK is the ability to travel around and explore more of the country. Rather than focussing on the major tourist destinations in London itself, living here has given me the freedom to go beyond the confines of the city and experience more of what the UK has to offer. While, in no way, shape or form, have I seen everywhere in the UK, I have seen so many incredibly beautiful places over the last nine to ten months. So, if you’re planning a trip to the UK and need a few day trips from London to add into your itinerary, below are a few suggestions!

Take a Step Back to Roman Times in Bath

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again – Bath is one of my all time favourite places in the UK. From the charming back streets to its fascinating history and the delicious food scene, Bath is filled with so many things to see and do. The city itself is bursting with charm, making it hard not to fall in love with the place. Add a fascinating connection to the Romans and a bustling food and drink scene, Bath ticks so many boxes. Just over an hour on the train from London Paddington, Bath is a very accessible and worthwhile day trip away from the big city lights.

Follow Alfred the Great in Winchester

I spent one rainy day in Winchester and would still come back to see more. One of the most important cities during the late 800AD, Winchester is steeped in history. One of the first things you’ll see when you enter Winchester are the ruins of the Great Hall and Castle gates. This sets the scene perfectly for this charming town which is filled with historical artefacts and fascinating ruins to discover. One of the best things about Winchester is that it combines city splendour with beautiful countryside. There are walking tracks abound in and around Winchester so that you can spend your day exploring more than just the city confines.

Explore Rolling Hills and Little Villages in the Cotswolds

Imagine this – tiny villages with cobbled roads and stone houses, surrounded by rolling hills, snaking rivers and beautiful scenery. That is what awaits in the Cotswolds. Filled with charming little villages and incredibly beautiful scenery, the Cotswolds is a perfect way to experience the best of the British countryside without having to venture too far out of the city. Explore the ancient stones at Stonehenge, take a walk through the open fields or enjoy a beer at a small town pub. Whatever your preference, the Cotswolds is a great way to escape the confines of the big city. I would recommend you explore with a car however as it makes it much easier to see more of the Cotswolds this way.

Walk the Coastal Route Between Ramsgate and Margate

A lot of Brits laugh at me when I talk about this walk being one of my favourite day trips from London but I think they’re missing out. If you’re craving some sea air and a long walk along the coast, the journey between Ramsgate and Margate is perfect for you. Starting at either Ramsgate or Margate, this walk will take you through some stunning coastal vistas, letting you walk on the beach by the water or on the hill to observe the world from above. There are also plenty of interesting things to see along the way, from Neptune’s Tower to Kingsgate Bay and the charming town of Broadstairs, the scenery on this walk is ever-changing. An easy train ride from London, it’s the perfect escape when the city is feeling a bit claustrophobic.

Take a Walk Along the Promenade in Brighton

This probably doesn’t surprise anyone as Brighton appears on many London day trip lists however it is a lovely spot to spend a day when the sun is shining and there is some warmth in the air. The Promenade itself oozes old world charm and there’s plenty to explore within the city as well. While Brighton Beach itself isn’t my cup of tea – I’m more accustomed to beaches with sand not pebbles – the town itself offers plenty to enjoy. Maybe you want to be a kid for a day and enjoy the carnival at Brighton Pier. Maybe you want to take in the art and museums that gives this city life. Or maybe you simply want to sit in a seaside restaurant, sipping champagne and eating freshly caught seafood all day. Whatever it is, Brighton really does have that relaxed vibe that comes with seaside destinations.
